Dr. Hamed Soroush 

Founder and CEO

Dr. Hamed Soroush is an internationally recognized geomechanics expert and entrepreneur with more than 25 years of subsurface engineering experience in oil and gas, geothermal, and carbon storage. He has conducted or managed more than 300 consulting and research projects worldwide. Hamed is the CEO of TEVERRA providing strategic planning, leadership, and technical support for the development and commercialization of leading-edge and value-add technologies for subsurface energy production and storage. Prior to that, he held several positions with companies such as Dong Energy, Shell, Weatherford, Senergy, GMI, and CSIRO. His current technical focus is on the sustainable development of geothermal energy and carbon storage projects with advanced geomechanical analysis. Hamed holds a BSc in Mining Engineering, an MSc in Rock Mechanics, and a Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering from Curtin University in Australia. He has published numerous journal and conference papers and has been selected as SPE Distinguished Lecturer three times in 2012, 2017, and 2020.

Dr. Joseph Batir

Geothermal Lead

Dr. Joseph Batir is TEVERRA’s Lead Geothermal Geoscientist with over 10 years of geothermal experience specializing in data mining, thermal resource characterization, numerical modeling, and geospatial analysis. Dr. Batir has performed geothermal projects throughout the Continental United States, Alaska, Africa, and Iceland, in areas of low-temperature, high-temperature, and EGS applications. During his Ph.D. and postdoctoral studies in the SMU Geothermal Laboratory, he collaborated with national laboratories, universities, oil and gas companies, geothermal companies, and mining companies. Dr. Batir was awarded a B.Sc. in Geology from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, a M.Sc. in Geothermal Energy from the School for Renewable Energy Science, and a Ph.D. in Geophysics from Southern Methodist University.

Dr. Julian Yao

Rock Physics Lead

Dr. Julian Yao is a Rock Physics Lead at TEVERRA leading the CCS efforts including CO2 plume modeling and monitoring projects. He is a rock physics and geomechanics expert with more than ten years of academic research experience and six years of industry consulting experience. He earned a BSc in Physics from Nanjing University, an MSc in Physics from Sam Houston State University, and a Ph.D. in Geophysics from the University of Houston. His research activities range from fundamental poroelasticity theory, fluid effects in inhomogeneous porous media, seismic dispersion and attenuation, and hydrocarbon fluid properties, to geomechanical applications, like wellbore stability, sand production prevention, and 3D reservoir geomechanical modeling. He also has expertise in developing complex lab equipment for experimental rock physics studies. He is an active reviewer for Geophysics, Geophysical Prospecting, Applied Geophysics, Journal of Applied Geophysics, Journal of Earth Science, and Journal of Natural Gas Science and Engineering.

Hazhir Rasouli

Civil Engineer / Project Manager

Hazhir Rasouli is a highly experienced Civil Engineer with over 15 years of experience in project management, coordination, and site inspection in ICI construction. Additionally, he has over 5 years of experience in oil, gas, and petrochemical refinery construction management. With a master's degree in civil engineering from the Azad University of Tehran, Iran, and a bachelor's degree from the Azad University of Karaj, Iran. Working as a Project Manager at TEVERRA, where he oversees various R&D and commercial projects. Prior to this, he worked as a Construction Manager at SAZEH Consultants Engineering and Construction, Asaluyeh, Iran, where he inspected the construction of a petrochemical refinery and resolved construction issues efficiently and effectively while adhering to contract standards and specifications. Additionally, he worked as a Project Coordinator at Petropars, Asaluyeh, Iran, where he coordinated the construction of blast-resistant buildings and assessed monthly invoices and WPAs (Work Progress Approval) of contractors.

Dr. Jinane Harmouche

Digital innovation Scientist

Dr. Jinane Harmouche joined TEVERRA as the Digital Innovation Scientist. She is a signal processing and machine learning expert with a bachelor's degree in electrical and electronics engineering, a master’s degree in Control & System Identification, and a Ph.D. in Signal Processing from CentraleSupelec, France. She has years of research and industry experience, in France and Canada, developing machine learning solutions and natural language processing in different sectors. She is developing signal processing and physics-informed machine learning algorithms to solve complex subsurface problems. Jinane enjoys reading, continuous learning, and developing new ideas.

Emilie Gentry

Senior Geothermal Geoscientist

Emilie Gentry, Senior Geothermal Geoscientist with TEVERRA providing geological mapping, resource assessment, and geothermal conceptual model development. Her technical expertise is structural and subsurface geology with experience in geologic research and oil and gas development, exploration, reservoir characterization, and regulatory affairs management. Emilie uses her knowledge in faults and structural geology and her experience in oil and gas to address major challenges in the geothermal industry and bring opportunity to the larger energy industry. She earned her B.Sc. in Geological Sciences from the University of Texas at Austin and her M.Sc. in Geology at the Colorado School of Mines. Emilie is an active member of Women In Geothermal (WING) and was part of the WING Future Leaders Cohort.

Jerjes Porlles

Geothermal Reservoir Engineer

Dr. Jerjes Porlles is the Geothermal Reservoir Engineer at TEVERRA. He holds a BSc in Petroleum Engineering from the National University of Engineering, Peru, an MSc in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Utah, and a Ph.D. in Energy Engineering from the University of North Dakota. His PhD research focused on developing a complex numerical model of geothermal and unconventional reservoirs including natural fractures, generating a workflow to evaluate a sensitivity analysis and optimize Unconventional and Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) with vertical and horizontal wells at different patterns, and developing geomechanics experiments. He has 16 years of experience working with oil companies (Petrobras, Repsol, Schlumberger). At TEVERRA, he is currently working on modeling and optimizing a configuration to economically store a surplus of green energy from solar and wind in the subsurface and developing a reservoir model to efficiently extract heat from EGS by injecting water or supercritical CO2.

Kevin Kitz

Kevin Kitz is an industry leader in geothermal development with over 35 years of experience. His work has encompassed the gamut of the geothermal power industry from the subsurface to the power plant, including reservoir, drilling, design, construction and O&M, as well as PPA and EPC contract negotiation. Kevin works with Teverra on a number of geothermal projects, including Synthetic Geothermal Reservoir creation, oil and gas well conversion to geothermal, and other geothermal and subsurface energy storage projects. He also advises on how geothermal energy reduces grid power, capacity, and transmission costs and reduces annual grid CO2 emissions, and as a result how geothermal energy applications can justify a large premium over other renewable energy technologies

Martin-Daniel Lacasse

Advisor, Technology Commercialization

Dr. Martin-Daniel Lacasse is a research Faculty at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics and serves as the Associate Director of the Internship Network in the Mathematical Sciences program (INMAS), following his passion for mentoring and developing talents in the STEM fields. Before that, Martin had a successful career at the Corporate Strategic Research Laboratory (CSR) of ExxonMobil where he spent more than a quarter-century working on industrial physical and geo-physical problems such as emulsion and polymer science, induced seismicity, and full-wavefield inversion (FWI). Martin is recognized for spearheading the development and deployment of FWI in the Corporation. At the end of his career at CSR as a Distinguished Research Associate, he was managing all leveraging activities related to geological carbon sequestration in XOM-funded Energy Centers in top universities and national labs, and advising on all research programs in the physical and mathematical sciences in the fundamental research lab of ExxonMobil. Lacasse received a Ph.D. in Physics from McGill University in 1994, after which he was at Princeton University for a joint industrial post-doctoral research fellowship. Dr. Jeremy Boak

Advisor, Geosciences

Dr. Jeremy Boak is the Geosciences Advisor for Teverra. He served as Director of the Oklahoma Geological Survey from 2015 to 2019, where he managed efforts to document and characterize induced seismicity due primarily to injection of wastewater (but also to hydraulic fracturing). Before that, he was Director of the Center for Oil Shale Technology and Research at the Colorado School of Mines. He worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory as a project manager in environmental management, pollution prevention and nuclear materials disposition and at the U.S. DOE‘s Yucca Mountain Project leading performance assessment efforts. He also worked as an exploration geologist at ARCO in Anchorage, Denver, and Bakersfield. He has a B.A., M.S., and Ph.D. from Harvard University, and an M.S. from the University of Washington, all in Geological Sciences.

Dr. Richard Esposito

Advisor, CCUS

Dr. Richard A. Esposito is a veteran of the electrical utility industry with over 30 years of experience in various roles. He is currently Southern Company’s R&D Program Manager – Geosciences and Carbon Management and lead Southern Company’s strategic initiatives for Net Zero emission using CCUS technologies. Richard has a B.S. and M.S. degree in Geology and a Ph.D. in Engineering with focus on CO2-EOR. Prior to working at Southern Company, he worked as an environmental regulator. Richard serves on the Ph.D. research faculty, in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is currently the President of the Alabama Geological Society, Chair of the Energy Division of the Geological Society of America and serves on the Executive Committee for the International Energy Agency – Greenhouse Gas Program. He also participates in research need assessments related to carbon management for the US Department of Energy and with the National Petroleum Council.

Dr. Abdelaziz Khlaifat

Dr. Abdelaziz Khlaifat is a professor of Petroleum Engineering at The American University in Cairo (AUC). He has more than 23 years of experience, gained within different academic institutions and oil and gas industry, in chemical and petroleum engineering. Khlaifat worked with different academic institutions as an instructor, assistant professor, associate professor and professor. He spent about three years working with the oil and gas industry as a senior reservoir engineer and as a manager for Weatherford Research Center located in Dharan Techno Valley in Saudi Arabia. Abdelaziz was a founder/co-founder of different academic departments, research centers, and a business incubator. He has authored/co-authored 91 publications.

Dr. Alan Barhorst

Dr. Alan Barhorst is a Professor and Department Head of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He is a Professional Engineer in Texas and is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Dr. Barhorst has had Summer and Leave Appointments at Sandia National Labs, Los Alamos National Labs, NASA JSC, and the Institute for Computational Engineering and Science at UT Austin. His research interests are broad in areas as diverse as Bio-Mechanics, Controls, Dynamics, Engineering in Medicine and Healthcare, Fluid-Structure Interaction, Manufacturing, Nondestructive Evaluation, Robotics, Signal Processing, Structural Health Monitoring, and Vibrations. Hoss Belyadi

Hoss Belyadi is a senior completion, stimulation, and data engineer with specialty in production, completions and production optimization, machine learning, and project evaluation. After working the first two years of his career as a completions engineer designing and pumping Marcellus, Utica, and Upper Devonian Shale plays, he has been a reservoir optimization engineer focusing on optimizing completions, reservoir, production, automation and ML, and economic aspects of unconventional reservoirs. He is the primary author of “Hydraulic Fracturing in Unconventional Reservoirs: Theories, Operations, and Economic Analysis, published by Elsevier. Hoss earned his BS and MS, both in Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering from West Virginia University.

Dr. Ling Liu

Dr. Ling Liu is a professor in the College of Computing at Georgia Tech and an elected IEEE Fellow. She directs the research programs in Distributed Data Intensive Systems Lab, examining performance, availability, security, privacy, trust, data mining, and data management issues in big data systems, cloud computing, distributed computing systems and big data powered deep learning systems. She has published over 300 international journal and conference articles. Prof. Liu is a recipient of IEEE Computer Society Technical Achievement Award (2012) and an Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Advisor award from Georgia Institute of Technology in 2012. Maria Richards

Dr. Maria Richards is the SMU Geothermal Laboratory Coordinator in the Huffington Department of Earth Sciences. Her research is on geothermal resources and energy development. Projects vary from computer generated temperature-depth maps for Google.org to on-site geothermal exploration of the volcanic islands in the Northern Mariana Islands. Currently her concentration is on the conversion of oil/gas wells into geothermal energy producers. Maria was on the Geothermal Resources Council Board of Directors and was chair of the outreach committee in 2011-12. She holds a Master of Science degree in Physical Geography from University of Tennessee, Knoxville and a BS in Environmental Geography from Michigan State University.

Dr. Christopher Ross

Advisor, Subsurface Monitoring and Visualization

Dr. Christopher P. Ross is an applied geophysicist specialized in technology-driven applications to help mitigate risk and improve drilling decisions for exploration and development projects. His focus areas are AVO conditioning, attributes, modeling and analysis; 1D stochastic, prestack simultaneous and machine learning seismic inversions; forward modeling and monitoring of CCUS projects. Chris supports Teverra’s subsurface monitoring and visualization projects including development of GeoDeck platform. Chris has worked for various oil and gas companies and contractors as a special projects geophysicist, and as a manager of technical groups. He received a PhD in Geophysics from Georgia Tech, a MS in Applied Physics from University of New Orleans, and a BS in Geophysics from Virginia Tech. He is a patent holder, has published many cited technical papers on AVO and neural networks, and has received aw ards for presentations on similar topics.

Prof. Catalin Teodoriu

Dr. Catalin Teodoriu is a Professor of Petroleum Engineering at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, Oklahoma and holder of the Mewbourne Chair of Petroleum Engineering. He has more than 25 years of experience in the petroleum industry and academia, with key qualifications and research in drilling and production equipment, drilling technology, integrated computer-aided analysis, well completion, design of downhole and surface equipment, software development, EOR, geothermal wells, and in the design of laboratory-specific equipment. Dr. Teodoriu is Teverra’s advisor for well design and construction, well integrity, and drilling optimization. He is the author of more than 320 publications, from which 85 are peer-reviewed articles and two book chapters. He was awarded, among others, the SPE Drilling Engineer Award and Outstanding Reviewer for SPE Journals.

Dr Mark Zumberge

Advisor, Geophysics and Tilt-Sensing

Dr. Mark Zumberge is a Research Geophysicist at the University of California, San Diego. His PhD is in physics (Univ. of Colorado) and he has spent nearly 40 years developing instrumentation to detect crustal deformation associated with earthquakes, volcanos, and sub-surface fluid movement caused both by natural gas production and CO2 sequestration. He developed a seafloor gravity surveying method that has been used on a half-dozen North Sea production fields and also has several patents on optical methods to monitor strain, tilt, and gravity changes. In addition to his position at the university, he is president of the small consulting firm Newberry Williams, Inc.

Dr Rui Zhang

Geophysics Adviser

Dr. Rui Zhang is Associate Professor in geophysics, holding John E. and Joretta A. Chance Endowed Professorship, at the School of Geosciences, University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Dr. Zhang received his PhD in Geophysics in 2010 at University of Houston followed by two Postdoc Fellow experiences at the University of Texas at Austin and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Dr. Zhang’s PhD dissertation was working a basis pursuit inversion technique to obtain high resolution seismic reflectivity with incorporation of sparse layer dictionary. The method was later extended to pre-stack and depth domain seismic data successfully. Dr. Zhang’s research interest also convers geophysical application on energy transition, including carbon capture and storage (CCS), Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS), Hydrogen geological storage, and wind farm site characterization. Dr. Zhang is the winner of the Best Paper Award of Interpretation in 2018 and Best Poster Paper Presented at the Annual Meeting in 2020.

Dr. Andrew Madyarov

Geomechanics Adviser

Dr. Andrew Madyarov is the Geomechanics Adviser Engineer at TEVERRA. Andrew received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mathematics from Novosibirsk State University, working on modeling processes in a catalytic reactor. Then he obtained his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering (Geomechanics) from the University of Minnesota. His thesis was focused on wave propagation and inverse scattering problems in layered media. After graduation, he joined Shell in Houston as a Geomechanics Specialist for almost 10 years, starting with research on in-situ upgrading and conversion processes driven by electric heaters in wells and then moving to hydraulic fracturing of unconventional resources. Andrew then worked with Reveal Energy on hydraulic fracture monitoring with offset well pressure, with TMK IPSCO on well-casing and premium threaded connections design, and with CNPC USA on hydraulic fracturing lab tests on large blocks. Since November 2021, Andrew has been working for TEVERRA on casing deformation, drill-bit vibrations, and other consulting and technology development projects.

Dr. Bill Bird

Data Compression Advisor

Bill Bird is an Associate Teaching Professor of Computer Science at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada. His areas of expertise include data compression, computational geometry, graph algorithms and optimization. Much of his work relates to the necessary compromises between theoretically efficient algorithms and the low-level implementation techniques needed to achieve high computational performance in practice.
